Responding to an Aggressive Timeframe with Additional Protection


JMB Insurance manages the property and casualty insurance for the owner and franchisor of high end coffee shops. Understanding that the coffee shop industry is dynamic, JMBI was not surprised when our client called and confidentially shared that they were merging with a premium coffee distributor. The Director of Finance asked us if we were able to evaluate their risk management needs and combine their entire programs in a very aggressive time frame.

While waiting for the information from the client and knowing that time mattered, we proactively contacted our carrier partners to confirm that together we could evaluate alternatives, model budgets, and combine the programs by the required date and with no gaps in coverage.


JMBI works with many hospitality and distribution companies so we were able to quickly analyze the exposures for the combined company and anticipate the underwriting challenges. The distribution component was relatively straightforward. However, the merger included properties in both New Jersey and New York. New Jersey requires special attention because it is prone to flooding and is considered undesirable to most carriers. We know which carriers would consider insuring the NJ location that was competitive and obtainable in a quick timeframe. In addition, we found savings by identifying the right workers compensation carrier with the lowest rates for their type of business and the carrier that could offer the best program for Foreign Package coverage.


We knew we needed to look into the new ownership structure to determine the best risk management strategy for the merging entities. We asked detailed questions about the operations to determine what was needed. This information helped us confidently work with our carrier partners and let them know that we were fully aware of the exposures so that they felt comfortable underwriting the risk.

We interacted with our client on a daily basis to keep them up to date on our progress. We evaluated and organized the information, presented it clearly and concisely to the client and carriers, and developed a comprehensive and competitive program within less than 2 weeks, during arguably the busiest time of year in the insurance industry. The new risk management program was ready and implemented by the aggressive deadline. The pricing was more competitive and provided Directors’ and Officers’ coverage, which the new company didn’t have before. We delivered a lower property deductible, and at the request of the client, moved the effective date out an extra month so they could have more time to revisit their commercial insurance again. Additionally, we saved the client 7.5%

The client was grateful that not only did we work quickly but also we paid very close attention to detail to make sure they had no holes in their risk management program. They noted that our level of responsiveness and proactivity was impressive and gave them peace of mind.
